About the Society

Welcome. We are an eclectic group of men and women who referee Junior and Senior rugby in Hertfordshire and on exchange around the country and overseas. A number of our members have been with us for some years so great bonds are developed between the members as they develop their rugby refereeing career. We will look after you and develop you at a rate that its best suited to you and your abilities.

The Hertfordshire Society of Rugby Football Union Referees was formed in 1959. The Society appoints Referees to Club, Schools and Youth games in Hertfordshire mainly on Saturdays but also covers Sunday and some midweek games. Typically 1200 games a season are covered by 60 or so active members.

  • Annual Dinner

    September 8th, 2020

I am sure it will no great surprise to you that given the continued problems with COVID-19 and the social distancing measures the Executive has reluctantly decided that we will not be able to hold the postponed Annual dinner in November. We are looking at alternative venues for April 2021 when we propose to hold a combined 2019-2021 dinner. If anyone who has paid for the dinner wishes to have a refund rather than rolling it forward to next year, please feel free to contact the Treasurer who will arrange a transfer. As soon as we have a venue and a date we will let you all know.

  • All Rugby Suspended- RFU Statement

    March 16th, 2020

Following government advice today, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) will suspend all rugby activity in England, at both professional and community level, including club training, league and cup matches subject to continued review. The decision has been taken following government advice in the interests of players, coaches, referees, volunteers, supporters and the wider rugby union community. Where possible, players at all levels are encouraged to maintain their own personal fitness and keep active during this time, while following government guidelines about safe distance and safe exercise environments. We will continue to review and monitor government advice and will provide detailed updates on the impact to the season in the coming weeks.

The Society provides Training and Development for Referees in 4 ways through:

»Monthly Society meetings held at the University of Hertfordshire

»New Joiner sessions for new Referees at University of Hertfordshire

»Weekly Fitness sessions at St Albans Athletic Track, car park (AL1 2DJ) 7:30pm on Tuesdays

»Formal reviews of your performance at games by Referee Advisors and informal feedback from clubs and players
